Baby Boomers Moving?
Many baby boomers are moving. In fact, approximately 4.2 million of us, moved into a new home last year. And this may not be their last move. That’s because most of them think they will probably move at least one more time. Will you be joining them and moving?
Retirees have many reasons to move. Maybe we want to live somewhere that’s warmer (13%). Others have decided that the big old house involves too much maintenance. Or maybe it’s just too darn big. One I’ve heard often is “Let’s get a smaller house so that the kids can’t come back”. After all, we’re Baby Boomers, I call the next generation the “Baby Boomerangers”.
However, the biggest reason baby boomers move, at 29%, is that as we grow older we want to be closer to our family. Maybe we want to be closer to help with the grandchildren. Or we desire to make it easier for family to help us with small chores we no longer can do by ourselves.
Many if us have a desire to reduce home expenses. In fact, 26% of us want that.
In addition, others own a second home, and we decide we want to move there permanently.
But Not All of us Want to Move
But not everyone wants a smaller home. Many people have the opinion that baby boomers want to move to a smaller home. They think since we no longer have a house full of children, we want an easier and smaller home to maintain. This is true for many, but not all of us. In fact, about 30% of us baby boomers want to move into a larger home. Some want room for other family members to move in. The multi generational housing market is growing – for good reason. Others buy homes vacation areas, because they want to provide a destination for the family to visit. Recently, we sold a home in an active adult community. The buyers “downsized” from 2400 square feet to 3300 plus square feet.
